Minor hiccup

**********
Friday I suffered a retinal detachment in my right eye, necessitating an emergency trip to the eye doctor.  I will be having it repaired on Monday morning, with a vitrectomy and a scleral buckle surgery.  Because of this, I may not post again for a few days.

The electricians have gone as far as they can go for now.  This is the new panel under the stairs, which will serve as a wiring closet.

The new Carrier HVAC unit is in place and has been hooked up, although there is no electricity right now. It's located in a closet inside the downstairs half-bath.

Here is some of the ductwork in place.

The windows and sliding door have been delivered.  I don't know when they will be installed, maybe this next week.

There will be a door upstairs onto the deck, but it hasn't arrived yet. This is the smaller of the upstairs bedrooms--adults only in here, for obvious reasons.

The roofers are finishing up today. Yesterday they got half of the existing roof re-done.

These are the shingles they are using.  I've tried to show the texture pattern in the next few photos.

So I'll sign off for now, and will re-post when I can see well enough to type!

Adventures in roofing

**********
Tuesday night a thunderstorm came through, dropping much needed rain for this area.  We got about 2" outside, and about 1" inside the master bedroom and bath. This is the carpeting in the hallway:

The ceiling in the bedroom:

and in the master bath:

The carpeting was going to be ripped out anyway in a few weeks, this just hastened the process.

Water was pouring down the walls, from around the a/c vents, and just generally splashing everywhere.  The mattress seems to be okay, although the bedding was soaked on the window side.

I spent yesterday doing loads of laundry and supervising the carpet removal and cleanup. We are now using area rugs until the wood flooring is installed later down the road. The smell is incredibly strong; whether it is of exposed construction adhesive or wet insulation or wet ceilings, I don't know.  I slept on the couch last night for the second night in a row, although hubby did sleep in the bed and seemed to be okay. We have fans going and will be deodorizing it today, but it is slowly getting better.  The ceiling will have to be repainted eventually, but it may take awhile for it to thoroughly dry out.

The reason it flooded so badly seems to be that the framers cut the existing eaves back too far when they joined in the porch framing, and didn't bother to put in any protective plastic.  The water ran down the sheathed roof, found the join between it and the porch roof, and ran into the house. The builder had his crew working all day to remedy the situation, and called the roofers out around noon to get the area tar-papered and shingled to prevent any further episodes. They are up there pounding away as I write this.

I swear this house is level, but you wouldn't think so from some of these photos! The shingles are a grey faux-shake style (I'll try to get a better close-up today.)

Fear of heights

**********
This morning several crews showed up.  Electricians, HVAC installers, carpenters all showed up and immediately got to work.

The roofing company brought the shingles and placed them all up on the roof.  We are not only roofing the addition, but re-roofing the existing house as well.

I was at the dentist and missed all the fun.

There is no way I would ever get up on that second story roof. But of course they are used to it.

Their equipment was pretty neat, too.  Last time we had any roofing done they sent the shingles up a manual conveyor.  This rig was so much better.

That's a lot of shingles. I hope they brought the right ones!

The electricians have spent the day running wiring and installing can lights and junction boxes.

The HVAC crew brought out all the venting material and have it all ready to go in.

Most exciting was when the carpenters showed up to frame in my new pantry!

It will nearly quadruple the existing pantry space, which was actually just two bookcases sitting next to that door in the photo.

Soon I will be able to keep a well-stocked pantry for the winter.

Framing complete

**********

This is what  2 x 10s do to a lovely heuchera. I hope it recovers...it was blooming too.

**********
On Friday the framers completed their work and took all their equipment and left.  They actually did a fairly good clean up job, although we did pick up quite a few nails, screws, and other pieces of metal and plastic they left behind. Their last day was spent framing in the porches.  This is the front porch, which faces west.

This is the porch on the north side, with the two gazebos.

And this is what it looks like now. Quite a change from the photo at the top of my blog.

If the weather cooperates, the roofers should be here this coming week, as well as the electricians and the HVAC guys.  I'm also getting a new walk-in pantry near the kitchen, and if it rains this week they can always work on that.

Porches

**********

We'd had beautiful weather for several days, so a lot of progress took place.  But on Thursday we had a rainstorm go through, dropping lots of rain in a very short time.  Although the crew had stapled up some plastic over the transition between the old house and the new addition, we still had water running out of the light fixture in the bedroom closet, soaking the carpet there and in an adjacent doorway.  That part of the carpeting had to be cut out, which is no loss since all the carpeting will eventually be removed, but the light fixture no longer works.  Hubby's closet had to be emptied and all his clothes are on a temporary closet rack in the spare bedroom.

Today the porches were framed in, and the gazebos got their roof framing as well.

The plumbing contractor installed the bathroom pipes and the upstairs shower stall. The elevator has been ordered, and the shaft is ready.

The house wrap went on today as well.  The views from the upstairs windows are fabulous.

The roofing has been ordered, and the HVAC will soon be installed.  Next week will be very busy.
