Adventures in roofing

**********
Tuesday night a thunderstorm came through, dropping much needed rain for this area.  We got about 2" outside, and about 1" inside the master bedroom and bath. This is the carpeting in the hallway:

The ceiling in the bedroom:

and in the master bath:

The carpeting was going to be ripped out anyway in a few weeks, this just hastened the process.

Water was pouring down the walls, from around the a/c vents, and just generally splashing everywhere.  The mattress seems to be okay, although the bedding was soaked on the window side.

I spent yesterday doing loads of laundry and supervising the carpet removal and cleanup. We are now using area rugs until the wood flooring is installed later down the road. The smell is incredibly strong; whether it is of exposed construction adhesive or wet insulation or wet ceilings, I don't know.  I slept on the couch last night for the second night in a row, although hubby did sleep in the bed and seemed to be okay. We have fans going and will be deodorizing it today, but it is slowly getting better.  The ceiling will have to be repainted eventually, but it may take awhile for it to thoroughly dry out.

The reason it flooded so badly seems to be that the framers cut the existing eaves back too far when they joined in the porch framing, and didn't bother to put in any protective plastic.  The water ran down the sheathed roof, found the join between it and the porch roof, and ran into the house. The builder had his crew working all day to remedy the situation, and called the roofers out around noon to get the area tar-papered and shingled to prevent any further episodes. They are up there pounding away as I write this.

I swear this house is level, but you wouldn't think so from some of these photos! The shingles are a grey faux-shake style (I'll try to get a better close-up today.)
